An absolutely beautiful ferry ride. It is about 20 minutes one way across the South Sound, with islands on all sides, and views of the Olympics and Mt. Rainier on a clear day. You can watch lots of marine life as well, from seals to harbor porpoises, and even the occasional pod of orca.
You will need to buy tickets before boarding, but they will usually collect them while you wait in line. Remember, that between 12:00 and 2:20 there is no ferry run to accommodate a shift change. If you have small children, be aware of the train crossing on the Steilacoom side, and that you are required to have them supervised while on board.
